    Why Is My Radiator Cold at the Bottom?

    What the cold-spot pattern means

    The location of the cold area on your radiator is a strong clue to the cause. Here is a quick comparison:

    Why bleeding does not fix sludge at the bottom

    Bleeding a radiator releases trapped air from the top of the radiator. This is the correct fix when the top of the radiator is cold. However, when the bottom is cold, the problem is not air — it is accumulated sludge (a mix of rust, debris and mineral deposits) that settles at the bottom of the radiator and blocks the flow of hot water through the lower section.

    Bleeding a sludged radiator will not remove the sludge. The radiator may feel slightly warmer after bleeding because the air gap has been removed, but the cold bottom will remain because the sludge is still there.

    Safe homeowner checks

    Before calling an engineer, here are some safe observations you can make:

    • Feel the radiator from top to bottom when the heating is on to identify the cold zone.
    • Check that both valves at the bottom of the radiator are fully open.
    • If the top is cold, bleed the radiator — but only with the heating off and the radiator fully cooled to avoid scalding. Follow your manufacturer's guidance.
    • Check other radiators in the house — is it just one, or several? This helps the engineer diagnose the issue.
    • Note whether the cold bottom has developed gradually over months or appeared suddenly.

    Do not attempt to remove a radiator, open valves beyond their normal range, or carry out any work on the boiler itself.

    Balancing, flushing, inhibitors and magnetic filters

    Depending on the diagnosis, a heating engineer may recommend one or more of the following:

    • Balancing: Adjusting the lockshield valves on all radiators so that hot water is distributed evenly across the system. If some radiators heat up before others, balancing can help.
    • Powerflushing: A high-flow, low-pressure process that circulates cleaning chemicals through the entire system to remove sludge and debris. This is more involved and is typically recommended when multiple radiators are affected or the system has not been flushed in many years.
    • Inhibitor: A chemical added to the system water that slows down corrosion and sludge formation. After any flush, fresh inhibitor should be added to protect the system.
    • Magnetic filter: A device fitted near the boiler that captures magnetic sludge particles before they circulate. This helps maintain system efficiency over time and is often recommended for older systems.
