    Boiler Repairs

Fast, accurate boiler repairs by a Gas Safe registered engineer — from loss of pressure and fault codes to leaks, strange noises and complete breakdowns.

When your boiler stops working, it's more than an inconvenience — it means no heating and no hot water. Adrian provides boiler repairs for homeowners across Grays and the surrounding areas, diagnosing the fault and carrying out a safe, lasting repair. With over 20 years' experience and Gas Safe registration, Adrian works on a wide range of boilers and is used to tracking down faults quickly and accurately. Whether your boiler has stopped entirely or is behaving erratically, Adrian can help get it back up and running.

    What boiler repairs cover

Boiler repair work focuses on diagnosing and fixing faults that stop your boiler from working safely or correctly. That includes:

    • Diagnosis of boiler faults using fault codes, pressure readings and physical inspection
    • Repair of ignition and pilot light faults that prevent the boiler from firing
    • Fixing pressure loss — identifying whether the cause is a leak, a faulty pressure relief valve or an expansion vessel issue
    • Repair of leaks from the boiler or associated pipework
    • Replacing faulty components such as pumps, diverter valves, heat exchangers, sensors and printed circuit boards (PCBs)
    • Investigating and fixing strange noises — kettling, banging, gurgling or whistling
    • Addressing boilers that lock out, keep switching themselves off, or display intermittent faults
    • Checking the flue and gas connection where relevant to the repair

Common boiler faults Adrian can investigate

Boilers can fail in many ways, and some faults are more common than others. Adrian has over 20 years' experience diagnosing boiler problems, so even if your fault seems unusual, it's worth getting in touch. If a repair turns out not to be the most sensible option — for example, if the boiler is very old and parts are difficult to source — Adrian will let you know and talk you through the alternative, such as a boiler replacement.

Fault codes and what they mean

Modern boilers display fault codes on their control panel when something goes wrong. These codes are specific to each manufacturer and point to the area of the boiler where the fault has been detected — for example, ignition failure, fan fault, pump issue, or pressure loss. While fault codes are useful, they don't always tell the whole story; a code may point to a symptom rather than the underlying cause. Adrian uses the fault code as a starting point, then carries out further investigation to identify the actual problem before recommending a repair. If you have a fault code displayed, note it down before calling — it helps Adrian prepare for the visit.

    Pressure loss and leaks

Boiler pressure dropping is one of the most common reasons homeowners call for a repair. A sealed central heating system should maintain a steady pressure — typically between 1 and 1.5 bar when cold. If the pressure keeps dropping after you've topped it up, there's a problem that needs finding. The cause could be a leak somewhere in the system — in the pipework, a radiator valve, or the boiler itself — or it could be a faulty component such as the pressure relief valve letting water escape, or a failed expansion vessel. Adrian traces the cause methodically, checks the pressure relief valve discharge pipe for signs of water, tests the expansion vessel charge, and inspects the system for leaks before carrying out the right repair.

    Noises and kettling

Strange noises from a boiler — banging, gurgling, whistling or what's often described as 'kettling' — are a sign that something isn't right. Kettling is caused by restricted water flow through the heat exchanger, often due to sludge or scale build-up, which causes the water to overheat and steam. This puts strain on the boiler and can lead to component failure if left. Other noises can indicate air in the system, a failing pump, or a fan issue. Adrian diagnoses the cause of the noise and carries out the appropriate repair — which might involve descaling the heat exchanger, replacing a pump, or recommending a system clean if sludge is the underlying problem.

Common signs you may need a boiler repair

Boilers don't always fail completely — sometimes they carry on running but show warning signs that something isn't right. Here are the most common reasons homeowners call for a boiler repair:

    • No hot water or no central heating, even though the boiler appears to be on
    • The boiler displays a fault code or error message on its display
    • Boiler pressure keeps dropping, requiring frequent top-ups via the filling loop
    • The boiler keeps switching itself off or locking out and needing to be reset
    • Unusual noises — banging, kettling, gurgling, whistling or humming — coming from the boiler
    • Hot water runs hot and cold, or the radiators heat up when only hot water is requested
    • You can see or smell something that suggests a leak from the boiler unit itself
    • The pilot light keeps going out (on older boilers with a permanent pilot)

Boiler safety and why repairs must be Gas Safe

A boiler that's faulty can be inefficient and unreliable, but more importantly it can be unsafe. Faults that affect combustion or the flue can lead to carbon monoxide production — a gas you can't see or smell but which is dangerous. That's why UK law requires any repair work on a gas boiler to be carried out by a Gas Safe registered engineer. Adrian is Gas Safe registered, which means he's qualified to work on your boiler safely. After a repair, Adrian tests the boiler to confirm it's operating correctly and safely before signing off the work.

    • All boiler repairs are carried out by a Gas Safe registered engineer
    • Adrian tests the boiler after any repair to confirm it's working safely and correctly
    • If a fault poses a safety risk, Adrian will explain the situation clearly and advise on the right next step
    • You receive honest advice on whether a repair is worthwhile or whether replacement makes more sense

    How the repair process works

    1

    Get in touch

Call or request a callback. Describe the fault, any fault codes displayed, and when the problem started.

    2

    Diagnose the fault

Adrian inspects the boiler, reads fault codes where present, and identifies the cause of the problem.

    3

    Repair and test

Adrian carries out the repair using appropriate parts, then tests the boiler to confirm it's working safely.

    4

    Advice and sign-off

Adrian explains what was wrong, what was done, and advises on whether further servicing or a replacement might be needed.

    What you can prepare

To help Adrian diagnose and fix the problem efficiently, please have the following ready before he arrives:

    • The boiler's make and model — usually found on the front of the unit or in your documentation
    • Any fault code or error message currently displayed on the boiler, and whether it appeared suddenly or after a period of intermittent issues
    • The current boiler pressure reading (shown on the pressure gauge), and whether you've had to repressurise it recently
    • A note of when the problem started and whether anything specific happened beforehand, such as a power cut or bleeding a radiator
    • Clear access to the boiler and the area around it, including any cupboard doors or panels that need to be opened
    • If you have the boiler's user manual or installation certificate, have it to hand
