    Heating System Repairs & Upgrades

From cold radiators and noisy pipework to full system upgrades — safe, professional heating repairs and improvements by a Gas Safe registered engineer.

Your central heating system is made up of more than just the boiler — it includes radiators, pipework, valves, pumps and controls, all working together to keep your home warm. When something goes wrong, or when you want to improve how your system performs, Adrian carries out heating system repairs and upgrades for homeowners across Grays and nearby areas. With over 20 years' experience and Gas Safe registration, Adrian diagnoses problems accurately and carries out work that meets current standards — whether that's replacing a single radiator valve or upgrading an entire system.

What heating system repairs and upgrades cover

This service covers any work on the parts of your central heating system outside of the boiler itself. That includes radiators, pipework, valves, pumps, expansion vessels and controls. Here's what's included:

    • Diagnosis and repair of cold spots, partial heating or radiators that won't get warm
    • Replacement of sticking, leaking or broken radiator valves, including thermostatic radiator valves (TRVs)
    • Removal and replacement of old, corroded or inefficient radiators
    • Repair or replacement of leaking or corroded heating pipework
    • Powerflushing and system cleaning to remove sludge and debris that restricts flow and reduces heat output
    • Upgrading system controls, including room thermostats, programmers and smart controls
    • Installation of additional radiators or towel rails where a new pipe run is needed
    • Balancing the system so heat is distributed evenly across all radiators

    Upgrades that improve your system

Not every heating job is a repair. Many homeowners ask Adrian to upgrade parts of their system — for example, swapping old radiators for modern column designs, adding TRVs to radiators that only have manual valves, or fitting a more accurate thermostat. These upgrades can make your home more comfortable and help you control your heating more effectively. Adrian will always explain what an upgrade involves and whether it's the right choice for your system before carrying out the work.

    Powerflushing and system cleaning

Over time, the water inside your central heating system can become contaminated with sludge — a mix of rust, scale and debris that settles in radiators and pipework. This sludge restricts water flow, reduces heat output, and can cause cold spots in radiators even when the system is running. A powerflush forces cleaning chemicals and water through the system at high velocity to dislodge and remove this debris. Adrian can assess whether your system would benefit from a powerflush, and carries out the process using appropriate cleaning chemicals and equipment. After a powerflush, a corrosion inhibitor is added to the system water to help prevent sludge from returning.

    Radiator valves and TRVs

Radiator valves control the flow of hot water into each radiator, and there are two main types: manual valves and thermostatic radiator valves (TRVs). Manual valves are either fully open or fully closed, offering no automatic temperature control in individual rooms. TRVs, on the other hand, sense the room temperature and adjust the flow of hot water to maintain a set level — giving you room-by-room control over your heating. If your radiators still have old manual valves, upgrading to TRVs is one of the most cost-effective improvements you can make to your heating system. Adrian replaces faulty valves and upgrades manual valves to TRVs, and can also replace lockshield valves that are corroded or stuck.

    Smart controls and thermostats

Modern heating controls offer far more flexibility than older programmers and thermostats. Smart thermostats can be controlled from a phone, learn your heating patterns, and adjust the temperature based on whether you're at home. While Adrian doesn't supply specific smart brands, he can install compatible controls and make sure they're wired and configured correctly. If you're upgrading from a basic timer to a programmable or smart thermostat, Adrian will explain what's involved and make sure the new control works properly with your boiler and system.

Common reasons you may need a heating system repair or upgrade

Heating systems develop faults over time, and older systems often benefit from targeted upgrades. Here are some of the most common reasons homeowners get in touch:

    • Some radiators are cold at the top or bottom while others are warm — a sign of trapped air or sludge build-up
    • A radiator valve is leaking, sticking or won't adjust properly
    • You're hearing banging, gurgling or clicking noises from your pipework or radiators
    • Your heating takes a long time to warm the house, or some rooms never reach temperature
    • You're renovating and want to reposition radiators or add new ones
    • Old radiators are corroded, leaking or visibly past their best
    • You want to upgrade from manual valves to thermostatic radiator valves for better room-by-room control
    • Your system controls are outdated and you'd like a modern programmer or thermostat

Why heating system work should be done properly

A central heating system contains hot water under pressure, and any work on it needs to be carried out competently to avoid leaks, water damage or unsafe operation. Where a repair or upgrade involves the gas boiler or its flue, the work must be carried out by a Gas Safe registered engineer. Adrian is Gas Safe registered and has over 20 years' experience working on domestic heating systems, so you can be confident the job will be done safely and correctly. After any repair or upgrade, Adrian tests the system to confirm it's working as it should before signing off.

    • Heating system work is carried out by a Gas Safe registered engineer with over 20 years' experience
    • Pipework and connections are pressure-tested after repair or installation
    • Adrian checks that radiators, valves and controls are working correctly before sign-off
    • You receive clear information about what was done and how to use your system

    • Details of any noises, leaks or changes in performance you've noticed, and roughly when they started
    • Access to your boiler, programmer and thermostat so the whole system can be checked
    • If you're upgrading controls, have the make and model of your current programmer or thermostat to hand if you can
