Gas Hob Installation
Professional gas hob installation by a Gas Safe registered engineer — safe connection, thorough testing and clear advice on positioning and ventilation.
A gas hob — whether built-in or freestanding — must be connected by a Gas Safe registered engineer. Adrian installs gas hobs for homeowners across Grays and nearby areas, ensuring the connection is safe, the hob is tested, and you have the information you need to use it confidently.
What gas hob installation includes
Gas hob installation covers the full process of safely connecting your new hob to the gas supply. Here's what's involved:
- Disconnection and removal of an old gas hob if required
- Connection of the new gas hob to the gas supply with appropriate fittings
- Testing of the gas connection for leaks and correct pressure
- Checking that each burner ignites, burns with a correct flame and operates safely
- Advice on safe positioning, minimum clearances and ventilation
- Electrical connection for hobs that require mains ignition (where applicable)
Built-in vs freestanding gas hobs
Adrian installs both built-in (integrated) gas hobs that sit flush in a worktop cut-out and freestanding hobs that sit on top of a unit. If you're replacing an existing hob, he'll check that the cut-out dimensions and gas connection are compatible with the new model. If you're installing gas for the first time, he can assess whether a new gas pipe run is needed.
Worktop cut-outs and clearances
For built-in gas hobs, the worktop cut-out must match the manufacturer's specifications exactly — too large and the hob won't be supported, too small and it won't fit. Adrian checks the cut-out dimensions before installation and advises if any adjustment is needed. He also checks the required clearances to surrounding units, walls and extractor hoods. Gas hobs need specific minimum distances from combustible materials and from extraction units, and these clearances are there to prevent heat damage and fire risk. If the existing cut-out or surrounding layout doesn't meet the manufacturer's requirements, Adrian will explain what needs to change before the hob can be safely fitted.
Burner types and ignition
Modern gas hobs typically feature automatic push-button or rotary ignition, which means an electrical connection is needed in addition to the gas supply. Adrian checks that the electrical connection is safe and correctly positioned before connecting the hob. Each burner is individually tested after installation — checking that the flame is the correct colour (a crisp blue, not yellow or orange), that the flame sits correctly on the burner crown, and that the flame supervision device (FSD) is working. Flame supervision devices are a safety requirement on modern gas hobs; they cut off the gas supply if the flame is extinguished, preventing gas from filling the room.
Ventilation considerations
Gas hobs produce combustion products — including small amounts of carbon monoxide and water vapour — which need to be safely dispersed. A properly sized and positioned extractor hood or adequate natural ventilation is essential in any kitchen with a gas hob. While Adrian doesn't install extractor hoods himself, he checks that the ventilation arrangements are adequate before signing off the installation, and he'll advise you if he has concerns. If a kitchen has been reconfigured and the ventilation is no longer adequate for a gas hob, that's something that needs to be addressed before the hob is used.
Common reasons you may need a gas hob installation
Homeowners typically need a gas hob installation when upgrading their kitchen, replacing a faulty appliance, or fitting gas for the first time.
- You've purchased a new gas hob and need it safely connected
- Your existing hob is faulty or ageing and you're replacing it
- You're renovating your kitchen and want the hob repositioned or upgraded
- You've moved into a property and the hob needs reconnecting or replacing
- You're switching from an electric hob to gas and need a new gas connection
- Your previous hob was disconnected for safety reasons and needs a professional reconnection
Gas hob safety and ventilation
A gas hob that's incorrectly installed can leak gas, produce carbon monoxide, or create a fire risk — particularly if it's positioned too close to combustible materials or lacks adequate ventilation. UK law requires gas hob installation to be carried out by a Gas Safe registered engineer. Adrian is Gas Safe registered and tests every connection before sign-off.
- Gas hob installation is carried out by a Gas Safe registered engineer
- The gas connection is tested for leaks and correct pressure
- Each burner is checked for correct ignition and flame
- Adrian advises on safe clearances, positioning and ventilation requirements
